Tips to help with back pain

Back pain is very common and can affect people of all ages. In most cases the pain is not caused by anything serious and it will resolve itself within a few weeks or months, however this is unfortunately not the case for everyone. Back pain is very common in the lower part of the back, however it can be felt at any point in the spine (from the neck down to the hips) and can occur for a number of different reasons.
Here are some tips that you can use to help relieve and manage your back pain:
Have an active lifestyle (resting is the worst thing you can do as this tightens everything up)
Improve your posture
Do not push yourself if certain activities cause pain
Take pain relief, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen
Use compressors, both hot and cold, in the affected area
Stay positive - people that stay positive in situations like this will generally have a quicker recovery
By following the tips above it is likely that you will see an improvement in your back pain, however if the pain continues to be a problem it is a good idea to see your GP to discuss possible causes and rule out anything more serious. It is likely that your GP will go through your symptoms, examine your back and then talk through possible treatments. Your GP may also refer you to specialist such as a neurosurgeon for further help.
It is often very hard to find the cause of back pain, and is usually caused as a result of a muscle strain or injury. In rare cases it can be caused by something serious such as Sciatica or a slipped disc. Here are some of the most common symptoms that can be associate with these condition:
Numbness or tingling
Changes in bladder or bowel control (incontinence)
Swelling or abnormalities in the back
Pain that is getting significantly worse or not improved over a long period of time
